White House releases updated strategy to reduce drug misuse

The White House released its National Drug Control Strategy, outliningthe administration’s priorities to reduce national drug overdose rates by aggressively targeting drug trafficking organizations and supply chains while strengthening prevention, treatment, recovery and community support efforts. The report noted there was a “national failure to anticipate the shift from prescription opioids to heroin and then to illicitly manufactured fentanyl.” It also recommended that the healthcare community continue prioritizing safe prescribing practices, including those outlined in the 2022 CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain, which AAOMS generally supported and commented on during its development.
