New York advances CBCT accreditation mandate

The New York State Department of Health is moving forward with a new regulation that will require cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) machines to be accredited by a body recognized by CMS – a state mandate believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

The New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (NYSSOMS) and New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) have raised concerns that the requirement could impose unnecessary administrative and financial burdens on dental practices without improving patient safety. Although department officials initially appeared receptive to these concerns, the decision to advance the proposal represents a setback for the organizations’ advocacy efforts.

NYSDA has developed a fact sheet outlining the proposed requirements, while both organizations continue to explore options to modify, roll back or eliminate the mandate. NYSDA also recently published an op-ed outlining its opposition.
