California makes changes to EFCS Permits

California recently passed SB 1453, introducing updated requirements for renewing Elective Facial Cosmetic Surgery (EFCS) permits and continuing education. The new guidelines, which can be reviewed in this alert, include the following key changes:

  • Limited privilege permits will no longer be issued. New applicants must now apply for full privileges under Category I and/or II.
  • Beginning Jan. 1, limited Category I or II permits will no longer be eligible for renewal. Permit holders who wish to continue performing procedures previously covered under limited permits must apply to enhance their permit privileges via the BreEZe website.
  • Renewing an EFCS permit will require completing 24 hours of approved continuing education in elective cosmetic surgery.

EFCS permits remain valid for two years and must be renewed alongside the holder’s dental license.
