AAOMS weighs in on student loan proposed rule

The Department of Education released the Reimagining and Improving Student Education (RISE) Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, which implements student loan-related changes enacted last year as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21). In its comments on the proposed rule, AAOMS reiterated, among other issues, its concerns about the new federal student loan borrowing caps and the elimination of the GradPLUS loan program, and urged the Department to explore creating a zero-interest accrual program for medical and dental residents, similar in intent to the AAOMS-supported Resident Education Deferred Interest Act (S 942/HR 2028). AAOMS also signed onto a coalition letter, organized by the American Dental Education Association, calling for a one-year delay in implementing the rule’s provisions.
