AAOMS Coding Certificate Program

The AAOMS Coding Certificate Program consists of three courses: Basic Coding for OMS, Beyond the Basics Coding for OMS and OMS Billing. AAOMS believes those who successfully complete the program should be recognized for their accomplishment and proficiency in OMS coding. While they do not receive certification, AAOMS members and staff who complete the program will be awarded a certificate of completion and a lapel pin. Read on for frequently asked questions about the program.

Coding Certificate Program Bundle

AAOMS offers participants the opportunity to register for the three courses that make up the Coding Certificate Program (CCP) in a single bundle. The CCP bundle includes:

The CCP bundle offers 25 CE hours and is available to AAOMS fellows/members, their professional staff and OMS residents. Once you receive confirmation of registration to an online course or the CCP bundle, you will have immediate access to the course(s) by using your AAOMS.org credentials. You will have six months to complete the online course(s). See below for answers to frequently asked questions.

Registration for the Coding Certificate Program with September 2025 workshop will open in April.

New this year, you may register for the Coding Certificate Program with a single transaction by purchasing one of the bundles outlined below. The only difference between each bundle is the format and/or location of the Beyond the Basics Coding course, as noted. While pricing may vary depending on member status, each bundle costs $300 less than if all three courses were purchased individually*.

  • Basic Coding for OMS, Beyond the Basics Coding for OMS (online) and OMS Billing
  • Basic Coding for OMS, Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop (spring in-person at Educational Weekend) and OMS Billing
  • Basic Coding for OMS, Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop (fall in-person at Annual Meeting) and OMS Billing

The courses included in the Coding Certificate Program also may be purchased individually without selection of a bundle; however, the discounted price would not apply. Bundle discounts may not be combined with other offers.

*Residents’ cost will be $0 for the online Beyond the Basics Coding for OMS bundle and $175 for the in-person Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop bundle to cover food and beverage expenses.

If purchasing the Coding Certificate Program as a bundle of online courses only, access to all three online courses will expire six months from the date of purchase.

If purchasing the Coding Certificate Program as a bundle including two online courses – Basic Coding for OMS and OMS Billing – and an in-person Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop, you may attend only the workshop for the date scheduled in that bundle and will have six months from the date of purchase to complete both online courses.

If purchasing courses that comprise the Coding Certificate Program separately, AAOMS will grant the Coding Certificate of Completion only if all three courses are completed within an 18-month period, beginning with the date of registration for the first course or the bundle.

No. If a registrant does not attend the in-person workshop, registration will be forfeited and is not transferable.

AAOMS recommends taking the Basic Coding course first. This course lays the foundation for the Beyond the Basics Coding and OMS Billing courses. There is, however, one exception. If you are employed by a member of AAOMS who will attest to your basic coding knowledge, it is possible to waive participation in the Basic Coding Online course and still be eligible for the certificate program. In order to do this, a letter from the OMS would be necessary. AAOMS strongly suggests taking all three courses to maximize your OMS coding knowledge.

No. The AAOMS Coding Certificate Program should not be confused with certification. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) are two groups that have stringent requirements, coursework and testing to award coding certification and credentials. AAOMS is not a coding certifying body. The AAOMS Coding Certificate Program issues a certificate of completion of OMS coding education.

Yes, all the AAOMS online coding courses and the Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop are approved for continuing medical and dental education credit. AAOMS is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider and accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Because the AAOMS coding courses are approved for CME and AMA PRA Category 1 credit, AAPC will honor 1.0-for-1.0 CEUs. For more information on receiving AAPC credit, email [email protected].

Yes. Following completion of each course, participants will be able to obtain a CE certificate that will include prior approval information for CE bodies, such as ADA, AMA and AAPC. Online course attendees will be able to print their certificate following course completion and course evaluation. Those attending the in-person workshop may visit AAOMS.org/MyCE to complete an online evaluation and receive immediate CE verification and proof of attendance.

Following completion of each course, participants will have an opportunity to print a CE certificate by visiting AAOMS.org/MyCE. This CE certificate will include prior approval information for medical and dental continuing education credit and may be submitted to AAPC. For more information on receiving AAPC credit, email [email protected]. AAOMS coding courses are not applicable for AHIMA credit at this time.

There is no expiration. The Coding Certificate Program is a certificate program rather than actual certification. Courses are updated annually as necessary to keep in line with coding and regulatory changes. Therefore, many OMSs and professional staff retake the courses as a refresher to stay abreast of new coding initiatives and regulatory changes.
