Many accredited OMS programs offer a one to four-week externship opportunity in which dental students are exposed to the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and the diagnostic and clinical skills required of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Externships are an excellent opportunity for those interested in the specialty to gain experience and to determine if OMS is the appropriate career choice for them. Students will participate in conferences and seminars as well as will assist residents and staff in the clinics and operating room.
Most externship opportunities require that the student be a junior or senior dental student from an accredited school in the U.S. Requirements and availability are subject to each institution, however, often students will be required to provide a letter of recommendation from the Dean of their dental school and proof of malpractice coverage.
