OMS Externship Opportunities

Many accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) programs offer a one to four week externship opportunity in which dental students are exposed to the full scope of practice – including diagnostic and clinical skills. Externships are an excellent opportunity for those interested in the specialty to gain experience and to determine if OMS is the appropriate career choice for them. Students will participate in conferences, seminars as well as assist residents and staff in the clinics and operating room.

Most externship opportunities require the student to be a junior or senior dental student from an accredited school in the United States. Requirements and availability are subject to each institution, however, often students will be required to provide a letter of recommendation from the Dean of their dental school and proof of malpractice coverage.
