Ohio overhauls anesthesia regulations

After several years of development and negotiation, the Ohio Dental Board has issued final regulations amending the state’s anesthesia and sedation provisions. These provisions closely align with the model anesthesia regulations developed by AAOMS in collaboration with the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and recently endorsed by the American Academy of Periodontology.

Of particular significance, among various other provisions, the updated Ohio rules package outlines specific requirements for sedating patients under eight years of age. Notably, the regulations mandate that the general anesthesia provider, who also performs the procedure in such cases, must demonstrate a minimum of 20 cases per year or an aggregate of at least 40 cases over a two-year period in children under 8 years of age.

These new regulations are set to take effect in April 2024. To stay informed about the implementation details, it is recommended to follow updates from the state OMS society, dental association, and Dental Board publications.
