During the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE), the federal government ensured that people enrolled in Medicaid maintained their coverage. States have restarted the process of determining eligibility for the 87 million Medicaid enrollees, as the PHE has officially come to an end. Overall, an estimated 15 million people are expected to lose Medicaid coverage during the redetermination process. Of those who have had their enrollment terminated, 71 percent were cut due to procedural issues such as not responding to requests for information to verify their eligibility.
OMSs are encouraged to keep track of their states’ Medicaid disenrollment processes and verify patient coverage prior to treatment.
