Maine passes insurance, reimbursement reforms

The Maine legislature passed two bills related to dental insurance and reimbursement reforms that will affect OMSs. LD 1800 prohibits insurers from capping fees for non-covered services. The enacted language also prohibits insurers from offering de minimis coverage to avoid the requirement. Additionally, the state passed LD 1834, which prohibits insurers from requiring dental providers to accept reimbursement via virtual credit cards that cause the provider to incur a fee for processing. The laws are expected to take effect later this year, after the conclusion of the First Special Session of the 132nd Legislature, which has yet to be determined.
