The White House’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) commission, led by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., published its first report on May 22 identifying what it says are the four potential leading causes of childhood chronic disease. They include poor diet (driven primarily by ultra-processed foods), cumulative exposure to environmental chemicals (such as fluoride), lack of physical activity and chronic stress, and “overmedicalization” with too many prescriptions and vaccines. The report was ordered by President Trump in February via an executive order. The commission and its partners believe the report provides clear evidence to support the development of policies that offer the best opportunities for progress, and it will produce a “Make Our Children Healthy Again Strategy” in August based on the findings from the report. However, some have alleged that the report contains errors, including fake citations.
