A new law in Illinois (SB 3305) has been enacted to address gaps in health insurance coverage for individuals with major jaw injuries, including those caused by cancer. The legislation ensures that patients can access essential medical treatments without the risk of insurance denials.
The law was inspired by a case where a patient with jaw cancer required reconstructive surgery and dental implants but was denied coverage by their insurance, which classified the implants as “cosmetic.” In response, the legislation mandates that insurance companies cover medically necessary treatments for severe jaw injuries. These treatments include surgery, dental implants, prosthetics and other critical procedures. The new law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026.
