HHS announced on July 10 a policy shift that will prevent undocumented immigrants from accessing certain federal medical and education programs. More specifically, the agency is rescinding a 1998 interpretation of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), which had allowed some benefits to be extended to undocumented immigrants. Programs subject to these new restrictions include certain community health services and substance use and mental health treatment.
