Dr. Susan Monarez was dismissed on Aug. 26 as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after declining to step down following internal disagreements reportedly over agency leadership and vaccine policy. Dr. Monarez’s departure came just weeks after her Senate confirmation and was followed by the resignations of at least three senior CDC officials. Dr. Monarez had been serving as the CDC’s acting director since January, after serving as the Deputy Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health. The White House selected Jim O’Neill, currently the Deputy Secretary at HHS, as interim leader of the agency.
