As previously reported, the Dentist and Dental Hygienist (DDH) Compact has reached the minimum number of state adoptions required for it to take effect, pending the implementation of each state’s enacting legislation. In anticipation of this, the DDH Compact Commission is being established and has begun initial preparations to ensure the compact’s smooth operation. States are currently in the process of appointing their representative commissioners, who will hold preliminary meetings to discuss potential bylaws, rulemaking efforts, leadership appointments and other administrative functions. It is projected the compact will not be fully operational until mid to late 2025.
It is important to note that the DDH Compact addresses only basic dental licensure and does not cover specialty licensure, scope of practice or anesthesia. While AAOMS remains neutral on the adoption of both the DDH Compact and the competing American Association of Dental Boards (AADB) Compact, the Association will continue to monitor developments and provide updates to its members as needed.
