In line with guidance previously published by the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists (AAOMR), the ADA on Feb. 1 indicated it no longer recommends using thyroid collars on patients during radiographic exams.
It is important to remember that while ADA and AAOMR issued these recommendations, many states mandate use of such radiographic shielding techniques in state statutes or regulations. All OMSs are encouraged to discuss any changes to current operations with their practice attorney and medical malpractice insurer prior to implementation.
