The National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) is collaborating with the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association to draft model legislation aimed at reforming prior authorization practices in medical insurance.
To ensure the model accurately reflects the range of healthcare providers who submit medical insurance claims, AAOMS, together with the ADA, submitted a joint letter to NCOIL recommending revisions to the proposed Prior Authorization Reform Model Act.
As originally written, the model language applied only to licensed physicians billing medical insurance. AAOMS proposed an amendment expanding that definition to include all qualified practitioners who bill medical insurance – a change that would encompass oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
NCOIL is expected to continue reviewing and refining the model legislation over the coming months, with input from professional organizations across the healthcare spectrum.
