Trump administration announces healthcare leadership changes

President Donald Trump nominated Erica Schwartz, MD, JD, MP – a former rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and a former chief medical officer in the U.S. Coast Guard – for the role of CDC director. She previously served as deputy surgeon general during the first Trump administration and during the transition to the Biden administration. President Trump also nominated Nicole Saphier, MD, for U.S. surgeon general after the withdrawal of Casey Means’ nomination. Dr. Saphier is a radiologist, medical journalist and author. Both are awaiting confirmation hearings by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Finally, Dr. Marty Makary resigned as FDA commissioner on May 12 after 13 months in the role. Kyle Diamantas, an attorney and the deputy commissioner for food, was named acting commissioner.
