Health Reform
President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 on March 23, 2010, and March 30, 2010, respectively. The two laws combined are referred to as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and ushered in significant changes to the nation’s healthcare system. However, as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Congress eliminated the ACA’s tax penalty for most not covered by health insurance, effective in 2019. In addition, provisions such as the Medical Device Tax and the Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board have subsequently been repealed.
