Coding and Billing Courses

The series of AAOMS coding and billing courses provides oral and maxillofacial surgeons and their staff with the necessary tools to achieve coding compliance and attain optimal reimbursement while preventing fraud and abuse.Online coding and billing courses are open to AAOMS members and their staff as well as other dental specialists who are sponsored by an AAOMS member. Attendance at in-person workshops is limited to AAOMS members and their staff.

Live In-Person Courses

The AAOMS Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop is an intermediate-level course concentrates on topics based on the AAOMS Parameters of Care, OMS-specific procedural coding for medical and dental, coding complications and medical record documentation. This course features comprehensive content to address coding guidance for the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition to existing coding assistance for anesthesia services, bone grafting, fractures, extractions and implants, this course offers insights into coding dentoalveolar procedures such as surgical exposure and uprighting, soft-tissue procedures, incision and drainage, cleft palate/lip procedures, wound debridement and repairs. This course also delves into ICD-10-CM coding principles relating to neoplasms, sequelae, complications and Z codes. Attendees will learn 2025 CDT coding updates for nerve dissection, partial extractions for implant placement and administration of neuromodulators and dermal fillers along with billing guidance on the expanded Medicare dental benefit as well as billing for facility-based dental services. Additionally, instruction is provided on E/M coding and documentation guidelines. Participants must have a basic understanding of CDT, CPT and ICD-10-CM in order to comprehend the content in this course. Basic coding knowledge or completion of the AAOMS Basic Coding for OMS and ICD-10-CM for OMS online courses is highly recommended before participating in this course.

This online introductory course sets the foundation for coding, covering the very basic elements of each of the coding systems. Designed for OMSs and staff who are new to procedural and diagnostic coding, this course will test participants and reinforce their knowledge with practice exercises and unit quizzes. Participants will have 60 days to complete the course, which is eligible for 7.0 hours of continuing education credit. Pricing, course overview and registration are provided below.

The online Basic Coding for OMS is Level I of the Coding Certificate Program (CCP).

This online course provides the same content as the in-person Beyond the Basics Coding Workshop. It is an intermediate-level course that concentrates on topics based on the AAOMS Parameters of Care, OMS-specific procedural coding for medical and dental, coding complications and medical record documentation. This online course features comprehensive content to address coding guidance for the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition to existing coding guidance for anesthesia services, bone grafting, fractures, extractions and implants, it offers insight into coding dentoalveolar procedures such as surgical exposure, surgical uprighting, tissue transfer, I&Ds, cleft palate/lip procedures, trauma, debridement and wound repairs. The course also includes instruction on the E/M coding and documentation changes that took effect in 2021 and 2023.

Participants must have a basic understanding of CDT, CPT and ICD-10-CM in order to comprehend the content in this course. Basic coding knowledge or completion of the AAOMS Basic Coding for OMS and ICD-10-CM for OMS online courses is highly recommended before participating in this course. The AAOMS Committee on Healthcare Policy, Coding and Reimbursement presents this new online course designed for OMSs and their staff to implement correct coding initiatives for reporting bone grafts and implants and to apply these guidelines to real-life coding scenarios. This course will review processes for verifying coverage with payers, discuss workflow of all stages, provide coding tips using CDT and CPT code sets and apply appropriate coding guidelines for procedures relating to bone grafting and implants. Completion of this course requires current CPT and CDT coding books. Participants will need these to complete the clinical scenarios at the end of the course.

In addition, participants will gain an understanding of the anatomical structures of the oral cavity, face and skull along with common oral and maxillofacial diagnoses and treatments. ONLINE COURSE DEADLINE EXTENSION POLICY FOR AAOMS MEMBERS AND THEIR STAFF ONLY:

Registration for the online courses is final. No refunds will be granted for online courses. AAOMS will allow only one 30-day extension of a registrant’s access to an online coding course upon written request up to 10 days prior to expiration of the registrant’s access. Requests for extension within 10 days of expiration or thereafter will require a $100 reactivation fee. Once an extension is granted, the username and password will expire upon completion of the online course OR at the end of the 30-day extension period. This re-registration fee applies only to registrations made within the last year.

Non-member registration for the online courses is final. No refunds will be granted for online courses. No deadline extensions for online courses will be granted to dental professionals other than AAOMS members and their staff.

Continuing Education Credit

All coding courses are approved for continuing medical and dental education credit. Continuing education credit also is available for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) coding certification. It is the intent and stated policy of the AAOMS Committee on Healthcare Policy, Coding and Reimbursement (CHPCR) that doctors are ultimately responsible for accurate coding. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged doctors participate or attend the courses with their coding and billing staff.

Registration Fees

Allied staff member pricing is available only to AAOMS fellows and members’ staff who have applied and been approved for AAOMS membership. Registration rates are based on the registrant’s membership status. Memberships are individual.   

Registration fees for the courses are per person. Online courses cannot be taken as a group. Separate registration is required for each person taking the course. Usernames and passwords for the online courses may not be shared.

Reminder:

Current CDT, CPT and ICD-10-CM coding manuals are required for the Online Basic Coding for OMS and Beyond the Basics Coding for OMS (Online & In Person). Current CPT and CDT coding manuals are required for the online Coding for Implants and Bone Grafts course. Current ICD-10-CM coding manual is needed for the online ICD-10-CM for OMS. AAOMS does not provide nor sell these coding manuals.
