The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is the largest professional society representing oral and maxillofacial surgeons in America and the world. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons here and abroad look to us as the premier source of information and guidance on educational, clinical and professional conduct standards.

Purpose & Mission

Our purpose is to contribute to the public welfare by advancing the profession of dentistry and in particular the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. We do this by:

  • Fostering programs of education, research, standards of practice and scientific investigation in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Providing means of self government relating to professional standards, ethical behavior and responsibilities of our Fellows and Members.
  • Providing opportunities for social and professional development.
  • Publishing the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The mission of AAOMS is to assure patient access to safe and effective care by advancing, promoting and preserving the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and the skill and professionalism of AAOMS members.

Governing Rules & Regulations

The AAOMS achieves its purpose and mission through activities, structures and policies outlined in the Governing Rules and Regulations of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The rules and regulations consist of three parts.

Constitution & Bylaws

The AAOMS Constitution contains the fundamental provisions defining the Association’s incorporation, purpose, basic governing structure, and obligation to promulgate a code of professional conduct and ethics.

The AAOMS Bylaws detail the structure of the Association, its composition and function, and the relationship between the Association and its members, including the rights, obligations, powers, and duties of each.

Code of Professional Conduct

The Code of Professional Conduct with Official Advisory Opinions and Judicial Procedures is the official guide for the Association and its fellows and members in maintaining high ethical standards in delivering oral and maxillofacial surgical care. The Advisory Opinions are interpretations, opinions, and statements of the Association’s Commission on Professional Conduct, which is charged with enforcing and maintaining the Code. The Judicial Procedures govern the operations of the Commission on Professional Conduct and are used in the adjudication of professional conduct matters.

Policies

AAOMS Policies are administrative standing rules enacted by the AAOMS House of Delegates, often on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees. The policies guide the association’s Board of Trustees, committees, and staff in fulfilling their responsibilities on behalf of the membership and the public.

The Governing Rules and Regulations is available, without charge, to AAOMS fellows and members in good standing through the Member Center's Resource Documents.
