Can I still take the OMAAP?

Answer:

The OMAAP has been sunsetted as of December 3rd, 2008 and the DAANCE will be replacing the OMAAP exam. You are no longer able to take the OMAAP exam.

What qualifies DAANCE as a certification program?

Answer:

To ensure the Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE) meets existing professional testing standards for certification, AAOMS follows the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (2014), as published by the American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education. The Standards are designed to establish criteria for appropriate development, use and interpretation of tests. Note: The duties and functions of the assistants during office anesthesia (e.g., OMS assistants, RNs, CRNAs, hygienists, dental assistants, etc.) are regulated by specific state law and regulations. This certification exam may or may not be regulated in your state.

Why are you changing the focus of the program from oral and maxillofacial to dental anesthesia?

Answer:

AAOMS offers the DAANCE to the staff of dental professionals with a valid anesthesia permit. Although this program was initially developed by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, there is clearly a need for the training for anesthesia assistants in all dental practices in which anesthesia and sedation are employed. We feel this program would be of the utmost value not only to the OMS office, but any dental office delivering outpatient anesthesia for other dental procedures as well.

When is the deadline to register?

Answer:

Applications are accepted year round for the Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination. All other Professional Allied Staff course registration information can be found on the Continuing Education page.

What do I have to do to register?

Answer:

Complete the DAANCE Registration Form and provide all requested information, including signatures and a copy of the front and back of your CPR, BLS or ACLS card. Note: the CPR/BLS/ACLS card must be current for the full six months of the candidate’s eligibility or the registration will not be processed. Submit the form with payment and, if a non-member or non-OMS practitioner, a copy of the surgeon's current anesthesia permit, to PSI at the address or fax number listed on the application form.

How long will it take to process my registration?

Answer:

It will take three weeks to process the application before you are notified if you are eligible to participate in the course.

If it has been more than three weeks and you haven't received an eligibility notification, please contact PSI at 833-333-4755 to inquire about registration status.

Do you accept credit cards?

Answer:

Yes. PSI will process credit cards and checks.

What manuals are required?

Answer:

The course tuition includes the DAANCE Study Guide. Each registrant receives one Study Guide electronically as a PDF file, and the sponsor surgeon also receives a copy with quiz answers included.

Additional suggested readings for DAANCE – such as the AAOMS Office Anesthesia Evaluation Manual, 9th  edition (available in print and electronic formats) – can be ordered through AAOMS Store at AAOMSstore.com.

We registered a person who no longer works at our practice. What do we do?

Answer:

Complete and return the DAANCE Substitution/Cancellation Form.

To make a substitution, you must submit a completed Substitution/Cancellation Form accompanied by a completed DAANCE Registration Form and a valid CPR, BLS or ACLS card for the new registrant. Substitutions must be made a minimum of 30 days before the candidate’s expiration of eligibility. Additional information is found on the DAANCE Substitution/Cancellation Form.

Are there other test sites available?

Answer:

AAOMS contracts with PSI to administer the DAANCE exam. The sites available are determined by PSI. Participants should review the list of test sites to find the closest Test Center, understanding that it might be in a neighboring state. Visit PSIexams.com or call PSI at 833-333-4755 for more information.

You may visit Schedule.PSIexams.com prior to the examination to determine if any Test Centers are closed. Every attempt is made to administer the examination as scheduled; however, should an examination be canceled at a Test Center, all scheduled candidates will receive notification following the examination date regarding rescheduling or reapplication procedures (see page 8 of the DAANCE Candidate Handbook).

When will I receive the materials?

Answer:

Your eligibility information will be emailed approximately three weeks after PSI receives the DAANCE Registration Form. The DAANCE Study Guide PDF will be emailed to the applicant after the eligibility information is sent. The sponsoring surgeon also will receive an email with access to the DAANCE Study Guide and DAANCE Quiz Module Answers. Emails are sent from PSI. Check spam folders if the email from PSI can’t be found.

How long is the program?

Answer:

The program spans six months. The examination must be completed by the date provided in your eligibility email.

When will I get the results of the test and proof of certification?

Answer:

Each participant will receive a score report immediately after finishing the exam that will indicate the overall score and scores by content areas. Successful participants receive their proof of certification and lapel pin six to eight weeks after the exam.

What if I fail the examination?

Answer:

Participants who fail the exam may register for a retest. The retest application is located at the bottom of the score report. It must be completed and sent to PSI within 30 days. There is a retest fee. Participants will have an additional six months from the date the retake form is processed to study and take the exam again.

What if I fail the retest?

Answer:

Participants who are unsuccessful on both exam opportunities may chose to enroll in the program at a later time. The registration process is the same and the full registration fee is required.

How many CE credits are awarded?

Answer:

Thirty-six Continuing Dental Education Credits are awarded through AAOMS after passing the examination.
