Only a vaccine with emergency use authorization (EUA) or approval from the FDA can be administered in the U.S. There are currently three vaccines that have received EUA from the FDA and one receiving full approval:

Comirnaty (Pfizer/BioNTech) – EUA granted Dec. 11, expanded Oct. 29, amended Aug. 12; full approval Aug. 23;booster EUA granted Sept. 22, amended Nov. 19

Fully authorized for individuals 16 years of age and older; EUA authorization for individuals 5 to 15 years of age; EUA authorization for booster for all individuals. Not recommended for those who have had a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of this vaccine or those who have had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredient of this vaccine. Vaccine is delivered in a series of two doses given three weeks apart. Booster dose authorized for receipt six months following two dose regimen and, if over 50 years of age, four months after receiving a first booster dose of any authorized or approved vaccine.

Moderna – EUA granted Dec. 18, amended Aug. 12; booster EUA granted Oct. 20, amended Nov. 19; full approval granted Jan. 31

Johnson & Johnson (Janssen Biotech, Inc.) – EUA granted Feb. 27; booster EUA granted Oct. 20, amended Nov. 19

Authorized for individuals 18 years of age or older. Vaccine is delivered as a single intramuscular injection. Booster dose authorized for receipt six months following initial dose.
