2007-2008

CHARGE

The Resident Organization Executive Committee continues to introduce oral and maxillofacial surgery residents and dental students to the processes of organized dentistry and medicine. ROAAOMS continues to support the AAOMS in its efforts of recruitment of quality individuals into accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery training programs. In addition, ROAAOMS assists in introducing residents to the specialty, as well as the progression through the training process and preparation for board certification.

GOALS

OMS Resident Outreach
  • Continue network of residents (1-2 liaison(s) per program) to enhance resident communication
    • Educate program liaisons on the dental school visit presentation and have program liaisons conduct at least 10 dental school visits
    • Continue discussion of conducting a leadership (training) meeting for program liaisons
  • Continue to include resident information in AAOMS Membership Directory
    • Continue to work with the Membership Department to provide accurate contact information for all residents
  • Resident E-News
    • Disseminate to all residents monthly on the third or fourth Friday of each month
    • Develop a hard copy newsletter following the annual meeting and distribute to all residents
  • Resident Programs and Events at Annual Meeting
    • Continue to conduct exceptional educational programs at annual meeting and begin announcing programs and events in May Resident E-News
    • Continue to ensure that ROAAOMS programs are highlighted and outlined in the advance and final meeting programs
    • Continue to convene the ROAAOMS business meeting on Friday afternoon
  • Increase ROAAOMS Involvement in the Political Arena
    • ROAAOMS Executive Committee to attend Day on the Hill
    • Encourage OMSPAC to continue to fund three additional residents to attend the 2008 Day on the Hill
    • Continue appointment of a resident liaison to OMSPAC to increase awareness of state and national legislative activities
    • Ensure that the advocacy newsletter is disseminated to all residents
  • Increase Involvement of Residents in AAOMS
    • Continue liaison with AAOMS Committee on Membership, OMSPAC and CGA
    • Increase involvement with Faculty Section, through the ROAAOMS faculty section liaison
    • Encourage residents to attend district caucuses and local society meetings
    • Continue to disseminate membership mailings to all Chief Residents in November
    • Continue to disseminate welcome packets to all first year residents in July/August
    • Encourage program liaisons to obtain resident contact information to increase earlier contact with residents, rather than waiting to obtain the data from the annual questionnaires
    • Increase resident involvement in other AAOMS meetings (i.e., Dental Implant, Joint midwinter meetings)

    • Attendance at national and regional meetings
    • Publications and marketing of OMS resident activities in ASDA Newsletter
    • Create awareness of OMS training and practice through presentations at meetings
  • Dental School Visits
    • Update dental school visit presentation
    • OMS residents exposing dental students to OMS thru informal luncheon presentations (24 dental school visits scheduled for 2007-2008)
    • Transition to have program liaisons conduct dental school visits to assist executive committee and save money
  • Recruitment of dental students
    • Continue to disseminate informational package to all dental schools, OMS Predoctoral educators and third year dental students including ROAAOMS presentation, predoctoral OMS curriculum guidelines, handouts, recruitment video, etc.
    • Informational articles aimed towards dental students in Resident Reach
    • Invitation to join ROAAOMS and its meetings
