Surgical Risk Management Case Review

Friday, September 19, 2008 | 12:30pm — 4:00 pm

This program will feature closed surgical cases. The audience will be asked to respond to their preferred treatment of the clinical case. Respondents will discuss how to treat the emergency and what could have been done differently to prevent the adverse event. At the conclusion of the educational program, participants should be able to exercise techniques identified during case presentations with regard to risk management; apply methods to avoid the causes and effects of potential complications; utilize the knowledge gained to prevent such morbidity and mortality cases within their own practice; employ various systems to prevent wrong tooth extractions; comprehend appropriate antibiotic management to prevent lawsuits involving infection control and appreciate the areas leading to problems in failure to diagnose cases.

For the first time, the resident organization educational program will provide CDE.CME credit for all participants!

Faculty Section Educational Symposium: Simulation Education and Training in OMS

Friday, September 19, 2008 | 10:00am — 12:00pm

The benefits of integrating simulation training in oral and maxillofacial surgery residency programs is plainly evident with the potential to increase surgical competency and decrease medical errors without risk to patients. The development of this technology may be in very early stages, however, the ACS, AAOS and other surgical specialities and major centers are heavily involved in simulation training as this is available 24/7 without harming the patient. It is clear that this form of training will continue to expand and affect medical and dental residency training in a profound manner. It is imperative that OMSs become involved in simulation education and this educational program will provide you with an understanding of the benefits of integrating clinical simulation into training in OMS.

The program will include various topics such as: What do we need in OMS, Government Role in promotion and funding of the new technologies, the military and surgical experience with clinical simulations, existing models in anesthesia training programs and the corporate role in the development of clinical simulators.

Join your colleagues for this outstanding educational program and become familiar with the various technologies and modalities currently available and under development for clinical simulators.
