CRET Activities

Charge

The CRET shall review and submit recommendations regarding:

  1. The criteria and standards relative to educational experiences for residents in oral and maxillofacial surgery at CDA accredited programs
  2. The criteria and standards relative to educational experiences for undergraduate dental students at CDA accredited dental schools
  3. The criteria and standards relative to approved and accredited programs in fellowships in subspecialty areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery
  4. Association policy and guidelines relative to education and training of its members, interaction with the Faculty Section, relationships with the Commission on Dental Accreditation, correlation with programs of the American Dental Association and other organizations and programs that impact education and training

Goals

  1. Continued review, evaluation and updating of the accreditation standards
  2. Review of the Match program and associated problems
  3. Improved interaction with program directors
  4. Improved liaison with the Faculty Section ( e.g. recruitment and retention, salary surveys, educational programs)
  5. Monitoring of educational issues

Standards for Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

  • Continuously reviews and revises as needed the Standards as well as accompanying grid systems and intent statements to ensure quality education and training
  • Conducts two half day training sessions for OMS consultants to Commission on Dental Accreditation

Commission on Dental Accreditation

  • thru RRC, standards are reviewed, and sent to Commission with recommendation to approve
  • RRC has OMS Chair who serves as OMS Commissioner
    • 2 CRET/AAOMS members
    • 2 ABOMS members

Faculty Salary Survey

  • Conducted a third Faculty Salary Survey in 2005
  • Data is beneficial to OMS Faculty when negotiating for salaries and positions and when hiring new faculty

Faculty E-News

  • Monthly electronic newsletter to all full-time faculty replaced the printed quarterly newsletter, Program Directors Mailing, to program directors of accredited training programs
  • Newsletter contains information of upcoming events, hot topics within the specialty and updates on various issues

Match Program

  • Reviews and discusses Match data
  • Reviews Match violations and determines, if any, sanctions for programs and residents who violate the match

AAOMS Annual Questionnaire of Accredited Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Programs & Residency Database

  • Upon receipt of questionnaire, all first year OMS residents will automatically become AAOMS Resident Members, no application necessary
  • Developed a function to link the Residency and AAOMS Membership databases together in order to capture residents in their first year of training and improve the accuracy of the data
  • Goal for 2006-2007 annual questionnaire to be completed on-line via the AAOMS website
